Berlin in der Vorwende Zeit, das war für mich natürlich West-Berlin, ein künstliches Superglitzerding mit Mauer drumherum. Urbanität am finanziellen Tropf, künstlich am Leben gehaltene Illusion von Metropole, eine glamouröse Enklave, voll mit Verrückten und, für mich damals das wichtigste, irgendwie "out of Germany". Mit dem Fall der Mauer implodierte dieses Idyll und die Szene wanderte in den freien Raum von "Wild East". Euphorische Aufbruchstimmung wallte durch die Stadt. Geschäftstüchtigkeit änderte Biographien über Nacht, Gewinner und Verlierer wurden ermittelt, die Karten neu verteilt. Auf mein Gemüt aber, legten sich die ersten Grauschleier einer zukünftigen deutsch-deutschen Normalität.

ART CHANGE

(in Berlin in the 90s)

Berlin in the pre-reunification period was, of course, West Berlin for me, an artificial, super glittering thing with a wall around it. Urbanity on a financial drip, artificially kept alive illusion of a metropolis, a glamorous enclave, full of crazy people and, for me the most important thing at the time, somehow "out of Germany". With the fall of the Wall, this idyll imploded and the scene moved into the free space of "Wild East". A euphoric mood of optimism swept through the city. Business acumen changed biographies overnight, winners and losers were identified, the cards were redistributed. But the first gray veils of a future German-German normality began to appear on my mind.

Die gesellschaftlichen Veränderungen erschütterten mich tief, mit meiner Identität als genial-dilettantischer Neo Bohemien lag ich völlig quer zum Zeitgeist und in einer quasi antipodischen Haltung zu den Turbulenzen in meiner Umgebung, entschleunigte ich mein Dasein immer mehr.

The social changes shocked me deeply. With my identity as a brilliant, amateur neo-bohemian, I was completely at odds with the spirit of the times and, in a quasi antipodean attitude to the turbulence in my surroundings, I slowed down my existence more and more.

Das Bedürfnis meinen persönlichen Fokus auf ein überschaubares Szenario zu legen, wuchs in dieser Zeit zusehends und bestimmte mein Handeln. Vom Schicksal mit einer geräumigen Wohnung bedacht, öffnete ich einen grossen Teil dieser Räumlichkeiten für die Szene und inszenierte dort einen Künstlertreff und versuchte mich als Galerist und Kurator.

The need to place my personal focus on a manageable scenario grew noticeably during this time and determined my actions. Gifted with a spacious apartment by fate, I opened a large part of this space to the scene and staged an artists' meeting there and tried my hand at being a gallery owner and curator.

Der Erfolg kam unerwartet prompt, die Resonanz war enorm. Gewinn, Existenz und Perspektive waren die Begriffe der Stunde und wollten auch in mein Bewusstsein, doch mein Denken war erfüllt von der Erkenntnis, dass ich den Abgesang auf ein Lebensgefühl inszenierte, das in den Achtzigern wurzelte und das gerade wie die Abendsonne am Horizont der Geschichte verschwand. Mitten im Erfolg stehend, wusste ich, dass eine neue Zeit ein neues Spiel spielen würde, und das ich nicht mehr mitspielen sollte. Meine Stimmung war in dieser Lebensphase recht depressiv. Den Leuten die meinen Club frequentierten war das ziemlich egal, was ich tat war neu, die Bude voll, das Becks immer eiskalt, die Atmosphäre prickelte und draußen zelebrierte die Generation Next ihren Techno-Tanz.

The success came unexpectedly quickly and the response was enormous. Profit, existence and perspective were the terms of the hour and wanted to enter my consciousness, but my thinking was filled with the realization that I was staging the swansong of an attitude to life that had its roots in the eighties and just like the evening sun on the horizon of history disappeared. Standing in the midst of success, I knew that a new time would play a new game and that I should no longer play. My mood was quite depressed during this phase of my life. The people who frequented my club didn't really care, what I did was new, the place was full, the Becks was always ice cold, the atmosphere was tingling and outside Generation Next was celebrating their techno dance.

Innovation und Synergie sind wohl die Begriffe die am besten das erfassen, was in dem Vakuum der sich neu definierenden Metropole geschah. Eine wohl beispiellose Entfaltung von Gestaltungskraft fand jetzt ihren Raum. Ob offiziell besetzt, einfach nur genutzt oder regulär angemietet, überall in den Ost-Bezirken entstanden Zellen der Kreativität, dies waren Räume für Träume und eine neue Generation von Machern, träumte recht heftig und verdammt konkret. Die gerade sich entwickelnden digitalen Ästhetiken, erzeugten unbekannte Blickwinkel und die frischen Sichtweisen erfreuten den Geist. Den Soundtrack zu dieser Entwicklung lieferten Sampler und Turntabel. Die in dieser atmosphärischen Dichte nun entstehende Club Cultur, wurde zum Spielplatz für ein beispielloses Zusammenspiel von Künstlern, Designern und aller Art genial kreativen Bastlern.

Innovation and synergy are probably the terms that best capture what was happening in the vacuum of the redefining metropolis. A truly unprecedented development of creative power now found its place. Whether officially occupied, simply used or regularly rented, cells of creativity emerged everywhere in the eastern districts, these were spaces for dreams and a new generation of doers, dreaming quite violently and damn concretely. The digital aesthetics that were currently developing created unknown perspectives and the fresh perspectives delighted the mind. Samplers and turntables provided the soundtrack to this development. The club culture that emerged in this atmospheric density became a playground for an unprecedented interaction of artists, designers and all kinds of brilliantly creative hobbyists.

Um meine Projekte zu bewerben, war ich in dieser Zeit ständig unterwegs. Von den endlosen Tanzritualen mit ihrem hedonistischen Körperkult, eher irritiert, war es für mich absolut faszinierend zu beobachten, wie sich in den Clubs ein kollektiver gestalterischer Wille manifestierte. Eine von tradierter Kunst Auffassung völlig unbelastete Kreativität mixt enthemmt was es zu mixen gab. Die Intention, Kunst-Lebensräume zu kreieren, die dem zukunftsorientierten Spirit, der neu entstandenen Szene entsprachen, schuf mit den Clubs einzigartige Erlebniswelten, unzählige sich ständig verändernde, temporäre Environments.

During this time I was constantly on the move to promote my projects. Rather irritated by the endless dance rituals with their hedonistic body cult, it was absolutely fascinating for me to observe how a collective creative will manifested itself in the clubs. Creativity, completely unencumbered by traditional art concepts, mixes what there is to mix in an uninhibited manner. The intention to create art living spaces that corresponded to the future-oriented spirit of the newly emerged scene created unique worlds of experience with the clubs, countless constantly changing, temporary environments.

Mitte der Neunziger kam der Umschwung, die Wendezeit war vorbei, alles wurde schon geregelter und einige schraubten schon kräftig an ihrer Version eines zukünftigen Berlin Hypes. Der Spirit der frühen Neunziger entzog sich der Vermarktung durch langsame Auflösung. Während in London kräftig Kunst verkauft wurde, die sogenannten Young Britisch Artists, wurde in Berlin kräftig renoviert. Es wurden Koordinaten für Karieren erstmalig festgelegt, Kurator wurde in Teilen der Szene zum Reizwort, Cheap Art und schnelles Malen von Party-Dekos, hielten so manchen Berliner Künstler über Wasser. In dieser Zeit wurde in London der berühmter Hai von Damien Hirst, mit 800 000 Pfund dotiert. Was für ein Deal. Berlin war in den Neunziger für Künstler wahrlich nicht der richtige Ort zum durchstarten, wenn auch viele das glaubten.

The change came in the mid-nineties, the turning point was over, everything was already more regulated and some people were already working hard on their version of a future Berlin hype. The spirit of the early 1990s evaded marketing through slow dissolution. While a lot of art was being sold in London, the so-called Young British Artists, there was a lot of renovation going on in Berlin. Coordinates for careers were determined for the first time, curator became a buzzword in parts of the scene, cheap art and quick painting of party decorations kept many Berlin artists afloat. During this time, Damien Hirst's famous shark was endowed with 800,000 pounds in London. What a deal. Berlin was definitely not the right place for artists to get started in the 1990s, even though many people believed so.

Geld wurde in dieser Zeit in Berlin zwar massig verdient, aber nicht mit Kunst. Die wirkliche internationale Relevanz und Signalwirkung der Berliner Szene, lag im sozio-kulturellen Bereich, wie eben in der beschriebenen Club Cultur und in den von der Szene organisierten Ausstellungs-Projekten und in der hartnäckigen und intelligenten Verteidigung diverser Immobilien, gegen kapitalistisch Begehrlichkeiten.

A lot of money was made in Berlin during this time, but not through art. The real international relevance and signaling effect of the Berlin scene lay in the socio-cultural area, such as in the club culture described and in the exhibition projects organized by the scene and in the stubborn and intelligent defense of various properties against capitalist desires.
